What Measurements Are Needed for a Custom Electronics Enclosure?

Prepare a useful brief for a PCB, sensor, controller or electronics enclosure with board dimensions, port positions, mounting points and clearance needs.

01

Board and component envelope

Provide the PCB length, width and thickness, then identify components that rise significantly above the board. Tall capacitors, connectors, displays and heatsinks determine the internal clearance.

02

Connector and control positions

Measure USB, power, network, switch, button, display and cable openings relative to stable board edges or mounting holes. Photographs help confirm orientation but should not replace critical dimensions.

03

Mounting method

Specify existing PCB mounting holes, standoff requirements, screw sizes, snap-fit preferences or other retention needs. The enclosure should be built around the actual board interface.

04

Thermal and environmental context

Explain whether the electronics produce notable heat, need ventilation, operate outdoors or encounter dust/moisture. These conditions require engineering judgment and may change material or enclosure decisions.

Send Your Enclosure Requirements

Send the object, file, photos or measurements you already have. The next questions can be based on your actual project rather than a generic example.

Questions about this project type

Can I send the actual PCB instead of measuring everything?

Physical access can help, but the project workflow should still document critical dimensions and connector positions.

Can ventilation be added?

Ventilation openings can be part of a design, but thermal performance depends on the electronics and operating conditions and should not be assumed from geometry alone.
